Elvis' three Grammy awards
Elvis was truly the King of Rock, which is shown by a number of his outstanding achievements.  It is estimated that Elvis has sold more than 1 billion record units worldwide, more than anyone in the record industry’s history.  In America alone, Elvis has more than 140 different albums that have been certified gold, platinum, or multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).  Elvis has also had 149 songs to appear on the Billboard’s Hot 100 Pop Chart in America.  Of these, 114 were in the top forty, 40 were in the top ten, and 18 were number one.  Internationally, Elvis is no less famous.  This is quite a feat considering that he never recorded his songs in other languages and, except for five shows in Canada, he did not perform in concert outside the United States.  Despite all of this, Elvis is known worldwide.

Elvis’s accomplishments stem out past his musical career into the realm of movies and television.  Throughout his career Elvis was in 31 movies and two concert documentary films.  In 1956, Elvis first appeared on television with his first of six guest appearances on “Stage Show,” a weekly variety program.  He followed with a pair of appearances on “The Milton Berle Show.”  In his second appearance on the show he gave a performance of “Hound Dog” that was considered so provocative at the time that it caused a national scandal.  Elvis made later appearances on “The Steve Allen Show” and Ed Sullivan’s show, the latter of which vowed that Elvis would never appear on his show.  Sullivan later changed his mind when Elvis’ appearance on “Steve Allen” surpassed Ed Sullivan’s show for ratings.  Elvis also made history by being paid more than any other performer to appear on a show.  He was paid $50,000 by Sullivan and was later paid $125,000 to appear on Frank Sinatra’s variety show.  Elvis eventually surpassed guest appearances and was given three television network specials.  These were “Elvis” in 1968, “Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii, via satellite” in 1973, and “Elvis in Concert” in 1977.  All three were some of the most highly rated specials of their time.  In fact, his 1973 special, “Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii, via satellite,” was seen in 40 countries by 1 billion to 1.5 billion people.  It was seen by more people that the Apollo moon landing.

Elvis received numerous awards throughout his lifetime.  Some of his most memorable awards, however, were his Grammy awards.  Elvis had a total of 14 Grammy nominations from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS).  His three wins were for his albums; “How Great Art Thou,” “He Touched Me,” and his live concert recording of the song “How Great Art Thou.”  Elvis was also recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award, or the Bing Crosby Award, when he was 36.  Elvis was also named “One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970.”
