Elvis Presley "The King"

Charity work

Elvis was well known for giving away cars, cash, and jewelry on the spur of the moment, but few know of his true generous and giving nature.  Elvis gave a benefit concert in 1961 at Bloch Arena in Hawaii that raised over $65,000 for the building of the U.S.S. Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor.  In 1973, audience tickets for his Aloha from Hawaii television special were free of charge.  Instead, each person was asked to pay whatever he or she could afford.  In total, $75,000 was raised for the Kui Lee Cancer fund in Hawaii.  Also, each year Elvis would donate $1,000 or more to more than fifty Memphis-area charities.  In addition to this, Elvis also made many contributions that received no publicity at all.  He would occasionally pay hospital bills, buy homes, support families, and pay off debts for friends, family, and even complete strangers.
