'King Creole'

     Most people know Elvis Presley as the King of Rock for his singing.  What some people don’t know, however, was that Elvis was also a quite successful actor.  Elvis was in 33 films, two of which were documentary feature films, both dealing with Elvis.  He began his acting career in 1956 with the film, Love Me Tender.  According to box office sales, Elvis was a hit.  Critics, on the other hand, generally disagreed.  After his movie, Flaming Star, it was said that his films became very formulaic.  It was the same story in a different setting.  Despite this, however, his fans continued to watch, if anything just for the chance to hear him sing.  Since Elvis made few live appearances during the time he was filming, people were anxious to see him, even if it was only in a movie.  Elvis did make some very well received movies, though.  One of these was King Creole, Elvis’ most critically acclaimed success.  King Creole was rivaled only by his third movie, Jailhouse Rock.  Elvis was also successful in the music industry through his movies.  Eleven of his movie soundtrack albums went to the top ten, and of those four were number one.  In total, his films and soundtracks from the 1960’s grossed around $280 million.  Due to this apparent success Elvis became one of the highest paid actors of the 1960’s.
