As Time Goes By
Elvis didn’t have best youth. This was well reflected in his elementary school experience. His education began in East Tupelo Consolidated when he was five and going to first grade. Since Elvis wasn’t born into a middle or high class family, life was tough. Later on when he was in seventh grade and had learned to play his guitar he would take it to school and play it to pass the time when he could. He was often teased by other kids because of his social class and probably because he stuck out playing the guitar at school. At the same time Elvis grew a lot in these years the reasoning is because of Slim. Slim would be like Elvis’s musical mentor in a way. Elvis met Slim while living in a African American community which probably added to the teasing at school as well as affecting his style in music and dancing. Even though he got teased, Elvis took advantage of what he had. This is because Elvis enjoyed hanging out with Slim. In addition Slim saw the potential in Elvis’s so he would pay for guitar lessons so that he could master it. Slim also had a radio station called WELO where Elvis got to perform live for his first time.
All stayed the same through Elvis’s freshman and sophomore year. By his junior year he slowly began to be noticed and by his senior year everyone knew who he was. The reason the students began to notice Elvis was because he competed in Humes's Annual "Minstrel” and opened playing the song “Till I Waltz Again With You.” This is after his music teacher saw no musical talent in him and many people had doubted his musical potential. By the end of high school with all the previous experiences and superior moments he had with music he knew he wanted to be a musician. So his rise to fame began.
